Fuji SE/BTD at Cyclocross Nationals in Portland, Oregon 12.20.2003
The Fuji Southeast/ BTD Cyclocross Team wrapped a successful season this past weekend at the U.S. Cyclocross National Championships in Portland, OR. After getting caught behind a crash at the start of the Masters 35-39 event, Fuji rider, Charlie Storm quickly found himself 60 seconds behind the lead group at the end of lap one. Forty five minutes of mud and cold later, Charlie cut the deficit to 17 seconds to the winner. This would be enough for a forth place finish in his first ever try at a Masters National Championship.
Saturday night and Sunday morning, Fuji’s two volunteer mechanics, Frank Jones and Chris Merriman worked almost non-stop to resuscitate Charlie’s bike and race prep the machines of Fuji’s Dan Doub and Kona’s Ryan Trebon.
Day two found the already drenched Portland course still a sea of mud. In the men’s Elite event, Fuji Riders Dan Doub and Charlie Storm had good starts and found themselves around twentieth place at the end of the first circuit. Fellow North Carolinian, Ryan Trebon, had strung the race field out for over a quarter of a mile by half way through the first lap. Fuji’s Doub fought long and hard in his first ever men’s elite cross national race to secure 33rd position. Fuji’s Storm had his best ever-cross national with a 14th place finish. Fuji volunteer mechanics Frank Jones and Chris Merriam shuffled bikes all day to Storm and Doub and eventual 3rd place finisher, Trebon.
The Fuji Southeast/ BTD Cyclocross Team wants to thank all of those at Fuji bicycles who made this cyclocross season possible. We would also like to thank Chris Merriam for his volunteer mechanic work at Nationals. Keith, the Fuji Northwest Representative for his tent, trainer, hospitality and standing in the mud for three days. Special thanks to Frank Jones, owner of Frank’s Cyclery in Raleigh, NC and Jimmy Brunner, team manager, for their endless support of the Fuji Southeast/ BTD Cyclocross Team.
